Note: This course has a prerequisite: Cross Discipline Canoe and Kayak Skills Training
This program is designed for those who have (or aspire to) a leadership role in kayaks or canoes on water. Whether you are a youth leader, work at a camp, are part of a Meet-up group or a club, this program can help you. We follow content in the American Canoe Association Level 2 Trip Leader Curriculum. The course is uniquely designed to work across platforms. Whether you paddle a canoe or a kayak, you’ll be able to rescue and lead from either. Part of your days will be spent covering planning and preparation, what to take, decision making (go-no go) and risk management.
Itinerary
June 4: 9am-5:30pm
June 5: 9am-4pm
Take those new tools you’ve developed in the skills workshop out for a test with some leadership sessions on water.
Day one is on flat water and day two is in mild river current. Expect to try a variety of boats, prepare to get wet, learn to manage risks and cope with adventures on the water.
Dates for 2022
June 4 – 5
Cost
$295 / person; dorm lodging with shared kitchen OR
$250 / person; camping on site
What to Bring
What to bring: Quick dry layered clothing (NOT cotton), a dry bag for a change of clothes, life jacket if you have your own and some food for days you’ll be there. Each dorm cabin has a kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave, some cookware and kitchen tools. Try to coordinate with others if you can.
Clothing Example List
- Long underwear: polypropylene, polyester, coolmax, wool, etc. — anything but cotton, both tops and bottoms, can be worn under shorts too for a very comfortable if not very stylish ensemble.
- Fleece Jacket or pullover
- Paddling Jacket or raincoat
- Water shoes or neoprene boots: We discourage sandals because they can get tangled in footrests….and that’s bad if your upside down.
- One-liter plastic water bottle
- Sunscreen
