SUMMARY:Greenland Immersion 2025
DESCRIPTION:We’re heading to Greenland again! Why Greenland? Yes\, it IS the birthplace of the Qajaq\, but it is also like witnessing when the Earth was born. You may see and set foot on places where no one has been before you. It’s one of our favorite places to paddle and we don’t get there often enough. We like to immerse ourselves in the local culture – you’ll travel like a Greenlander…hand-lining cod or char for dinner\, learning to eat seal (definitely an acquired taste) or musk-ox\, hunting with your camera\, paddling in sea ice and camping in sites used as traditional hunt camps for generations. Think cultural immersion by paddle….all with a safety net that comes with our over 40-year history in the kayak tripping business. \nThere are a few trips available to Greenland these days…some very high-end with a little paddling and a lot of insulation from local culture; usually from a Cruise Ship. Others are more “expedition style”\, where you do all your own cooking\, fly by the seat of your pants and hope it all turns out. Ours is completely different. Combine the logistics expertise that Uncommon Adventures is known for with great equipment\, a well-chosen small-group team (max of 6-8 w/two guides plus local guide) and the added cultural element of traveling with a local and you have a simply unparalleled trip. \nWe will embark on a mesmerizing journey through rarely visited Uummannaq Fjord\, one of West Greenland’s most expansive and picturesque. Its vast network of fjords\, bays\, and inlets in every direction provides an awe-inspiring setting for an unforgettable sea kayak expedition\, revealing stunning and pristine landscapes at every turn. \nGetting There\nIt is a hard place to get to\, but that makes it even more worthwhile. We will assist you with travel plans to help things go smoothly. You need to book flights from home through Iceland or Denmark to Ilulissat. There are rumors that Icelandair is starting a direct flight to Nuuk from New York and Boston. Fingers crossed! Once you get to Ilulissat you will catch a domestic Air Greenland flight. The route is Ilulissat (JAV) to Uummannaq (UMD) via Qaarsut (JQA). A dash-8 plane to Qaarsut and a helicopter to Uummannaq. All can be booked on one ticket and a return trip costs around 500 USD. We will help with details. \nPace\nThis is a longer trip that will travel between 20-30 kilometers each day with time enough for hiking and exploration. Our itinerary will be dependent on weather\, group interests\, and is always flexible. \nWeather / Conditions\nSimilar conditions to south central Alaska can be expected. Daytime highs may get to be high 50s with evening lows into the low 40s. Not a lot of rain in late June\, but can be buggy\, so headnets or bugshirts are in order. Remember… summer near the arctic circle means lots and lots of daylight (19 hours+). You won’t need a headlamp\, but you will need sunscreen! \nQualifications\nThis program is built for those with a higher skill level that is appropriate for the kind of conditions we are likely to encounter. If you haven’t been through the BCU or ACA ranksto gain these skills\, we will accept a paddling resume and word from those who can vouch for you. Our trips owe a great deal of their success to this participant screening process. BCU 3 star or L-3 ACA is the bar we set as a minimum for this trip. \nDates & Cost \n$5800 per person (subject to change with currency fluctuations)\, double occupancy – 15 days total. We try to provide a good value for a large commitment trip like this. It is a very expensive place to travel to\, but there is absolutely no place on earth like it. It is our all-time favorite place to paddle. We need a minimum of 5 participants and will take up to 8 total. \nDates for 2025\n\nJune 13-26\, 2025\n\nWhat’s included\n Guides\n Sea kayak (single or double)\, spray skirt\, PFD\, paddle\, pogies.\n Group Safety gear: first aid\, repair\, Satphone\, tarp\n Fishing gear\n Tents (personal tents plus kitchen tent):\n Dry bags (limited supply)\n Cooking equipment\, cookware\, and all expedition meals and coffee.\n Unforgettable experience\n Heliport pick-up and drop-off\n Accommodation in (Dbl) Uummannaq\n Breakfasts at Guesthouse\n All meals while kayaking \nWhat’s NOT included\n Travel outside of itinerary dates\n Transfer from Illulisat. The route is Ilulissat (JAV) to Uummannaq (UMD) via Qaarsut (JQA). A dash-8 plane to Qaarsut and a helicopter to Uummannaq. All can be booked on one ticket and a return trip costs around 500 USD. We will help you get correct flight numbers\, etc.\n Dry suits\n Sleeping bags and sleeping mats\n Travel Insurance\n Gratuities\n Meals in town\n Alcohol \nPersonal Items: Be sure to review the packing list: It is important that you review this list early on in case you have questions or need to order gear.\n \n\n\n \n\n\nRegistration\n \nNOTE: If a booking date shows on the calendar below\, there is space available but always feel free to call or email with specific questions. If the trip is full and you’d like to be waitlisted\, give us a call. \nReservations are held with a 50% deposit and a completed booking on our website\, with the remaining 50% balance due 60 days before departure. Balances are paid automatically to your credit card. The price below reflects the full amount\, including service fees. Your initial payment will be a 50% deposit (assuming you book 60+ days prior to the course). \nNOTE: You must choose the date of the trip you want before clicking on BOOK NOW. SUMMARY:Paddling Sitka’s Otter Coast: The Chichagof Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:This remote kayak expedition originates in Sitka which is served by several flights a day from Seattle\, so it is both easy and relatively inexpensive to fly to. Weeklong remote kayak trips to this part of Alaska are very uncommon and feature some remote and beautiful country. During our exploratory trip last year\, we saw exactly 2 people and zero other kayaks for the first 6 days. Campsites with fresh water were pretty easy to find and quite pleasant along with some terrific wildlife viewing. Paddle with hundreds of sea otters\, sea birds\, seals\, sea lions\, humpback whales and on land you’ll find numerous Sitka blacktail deer and talkative Ravens. This area is also home to large numbers of bald eagles and wild grizzly bears. Bears along this remote part of Alaska aren’t very interested in humans and always retreated into the dense forest whenever we encountered them. Last year we encountered a NatGeo trip on our return to Sitka that were doing a kayak trip as well…with about 60 others at three times what this trip will cost you. \nIf your interests include navigation in areas where tidal currents rule your day and days are punctuated by fresh caught fish and huckleberry desserts\, then read further. To give the best shot at a beautiful wilderness experience\, we are starting out with a boat shuttle to get us deep into the backcountry and away from fishing boat and cruise ship traffic on day 1. We’re going to try to include a hot springs stop along the way and leave some time for foraging\, photos\, some fishing and perhaps a layover day. The weather in early July can actually be quite pleasant…not necessarily the “liquid sunshine” that SE Alaska is known for. \nWe start by hand picking a group of 4-6 paddlers and outfit them with excellent expedition kayaks that we’ll be bringing out ourselves. NDK\, Wilderness\, Seaward and Werner are all names we are proud to represent. Next we provision with fresh and real food\, bombproof tents and full-on safety gear. Michael\, an ACA certified Instructor Trainer\, will be primary guide on this trip. You can even be assessed for your L-3 and 4 skills at the end of this trip if you wish. \n\n\nItinerary\nDay 1\nArrival in Sitka. Meet up for dinner and overnight (lodging included). \nDay 2\nOrientation Day: provision\, pack\, prepare\, plan> Overnight in Sitka or boat shuttle out depending on our weather window. \nDays 3 – 8\nFrom our drop off point up near White Sulphur hot springs\, we’ll invest our time in exploring some nooks and crannies\, tide races\, river mouths (fishing for salmon anyone?)\, mussel beds\, island hopping hot spring baths\, foraging for wild huckleberries\, salmonberries and enjoying fresh rockfish for dinner\, paddling wide open spaces and narrow channels. Expect to share this experience with humpback whales\, sea otters\, brown bears\, sea lions\, eagles\, ospreys\, seals\, mink and a variety of other wild creatures that call this remote wilderness home. \nDay 9\nReturn on the afternoon of July 8 to de-rig and transfer to lodging for a hot shower and a fine dinner out at our favorite restaurant in Sitka and perhaps a spruce IPA at Baranof Brewing.
