We’ll strap our sea kayaks to the roof of a ferry\, cross more than 50 miles of open water\, and land on Isle Royale—the largest island in the largest freshwater lake in the world. \nThis special early-season expedition offers a rare chance to experience Isle Royale before the crowds arrive. Expect cold water\, crisp mornings\, unpredictable May weather\, and very few other people. In return\, we’ll explore quiet campsites\, empty stretches of shoreline\, secluded beaches\, hidden coves\, and the ancient volcanic rock of an island shaped by Lake Superior. \nThis isn’t just another paddling trip. It’s an adventure into untamed wilderness\, where moose roam the shoreline\, wolves keep to the shadows\, and loons call across the glassy bays. Between paddles\, we’ll hike to sweeping viewpoints\, explore historic sites\, swim in Superior’s icy-clear water\, try our hand at lake trout fishing\, and photograph the island’s rugged beauty. \nOver ten days\, including two travel days and eight nights on the island with days of paddling and exploring\, we’ll follow a flexible route shaped by Lake Superior\, the weather\, and the group’s skills and interests. Good conditions may mean a longer paddling day; an interesting campsite or a change in weather may convince us to stay put and explore. We don’t just “bag miles.” We immerse ourselves in Superior’s nature and culture at a pace that lets us truly connect with this extraordinary place. \nEarly season makes this a more committed adventure than our summer trips. Lake Superior will be extremely cold\, nights may approach freezing\, and May can deliver sunshine\, rain\, strong winds\, or even snow. Participants should be intermediate sea kayakers comfortable paddling 8–15 miles per day in 2–3 foot seas with winds up to approximately 15 knots. You should also be familiar with group rescues\, wilderness camping\, and changing plans as conditions require. If you have past formal training\, ACA Levels 2–4 are appropriate. \nUncommon Adventures has guided more expeditions to Isle Royale than anyone else. Our long-standing relationships with park staff mean you’ll get an insider’s perspective on the island’s history\, wildlife\, and conservation efforts. DESCRIPTION:We are going to strap our kayaks to the roof of a ferry\, motor over fifty miles out to the largest island in the largest lake in the world and go kayaking. This is not something to be taken lightly\, but our “sampler” program is designed for those who are interested in learning to camp out of their kayaks in relatively calm conditions. It is appropriate for adventurous beginners who have had group rescue practice and can paddle up to 10 miles/day in 1-2 ft seas and 10 knots of wind. We offer a number of weekend and day workshops that can help you grow those skills or point you to a coach in your area. \nSea Kayaking Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior\nThis is a magical place wrapped up in ancient rock\, thimbleberries and the unforgiving waters of Lake Superior. This unique island park with its moose and wolves is a popular destination for backpackers\, but since it is an island we thought that it would make more sense to explore it by kayak! There will be plenty of time for day hikes\, brisk swims\, good lake trout fishing\, kayaking and listening to the loons. We plan this trip together with you based on weather outlook\, park conditions and your own goals and tastes. To ensure your safety and maintain the flexibility of small camps\, we limit this trip to only five participants. \n\nSample Itinerary for 7 Day Trip\n(includes 2 travel days)\nDay 1\nRendezvous in Copper Harbor at 5:00 PM at the Minnetonka Resort for a quick backcountry packing orientation. \nDay 2\n7 AM rendezvous at Isle Royale Queen dock for the 3.5 hour ride to Rock Harbor. Organize and pack for the short paddle to the first campsite. Go over basic strokes\, braces and rescue drills. \nDays 3-5\nThe heart of the trip–you’ll find yourself paddling an average of 4 or 5 hours/day sandwiched with day hikes\, fishing\, shooting photos\, looking for Moose and listening to the music of our largest freshwater sea. For this trip we often use just two camps to use as two separate hubs. We find you spend more time seeing the island\, than making and breaking camp this way. DESCRIPTION:We are going to strap our kayaks to the roof of a ferry\, motor over fifty miles out to the largest island in the largest lake in the world and go kayaking. This is not something to be taken lightly\, but our “sampler” program is designed for those who are interested in learning to camp out of their kayaks in relatively calm conditions. It is appropriate for adventurous beginners who have had group rescue practice and can paddle up to 10 miles/day in 1-2 ft seas and 10 knots of wind. We offer a number of weekend and day workshops that can help you grow those skills or point you to a coach in your area. \nSea Kayaking Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior\nThis is a magical place wrapped up in ancient rock\, thimbleberries and the unforgiving waters of Lake Superior. This unique island park with its moose and wolves is a popular destination for backpackers\, but since it is an island we thought that it would make more sense to explore it by kayak! There will be plenty of time for day hikes\, brisk swims\, good lake trout fishing\, kayaking and listening to the loons. We plan this trip together with you based on weather outlook\, park conditions and your own goals and tastes. To ensure your safety and maintain the flexibility of small camps\, we limit this trip to only five participants. \n\nSample Itinerary for 7 Day Trip\n(includes 2 travel days)\nDay 1\nRendezvous in Copper Harbor at 5:00 PM at the Minnetonka Resort for a quick backcountry packing orientation. \nDay 2\n7 AM rendezvous at Isle Royale Queen dock for the 3.5 hour ride to Rock Harbor. Organize and pack for the short paddle to the first campsite. Go over basic strokes\, braces and rescue drills. \nDays 3-5\nThe heart of the trip–you’ll find yourself paddling an average of 4 or 5 hours/day sandwiched with day hikes\, fishing\, shooting photos\, looking for Moose and listening to the music of our largest freshwater sea.
