SUMMARY:Isle Royale Explorer Long Play
DESCRIPTION:We are going to strap our kayaks to the roof of a ferry\, motor over fifty miles out to the largest island in the largest lake in the world and go kayaking. This is not a small thing. \nSea Kayaking Isle Royale National Park on Lake Superior\nThis is a magical place wrapped up in ancient rock\, thimbleberries and the unforgiving waters of Lake Superior. This unique island park with its moose and wolves is a popular destination for backpackers\, but since it is an island we thought that it would make more sense to explore it by kayak! \nThere will be plenty of time for day hikes\, brisk swims\, good lake trout fishing\, kayaking and listening to the loons. Like you\, no two of these trips are the same. We plan these trips together with you based on the weather outlook\, personal tastes\, goals and skills. Our style is not to bag miles\, but to take a deep dive into Superior kayaking and the island’s nature AND culture. No one has guided more trips here than we have or developed deeper relationships with the park staff. \nNOTE: In many ways this trip is similar to our Explorer trip\, but this is MORE exploratory. Paddling skills for this will be on par with the Explorer option\, but this trip is longer\, with more flexible camping otpions and range further from our start point. Where we will get to and how long we spend in each place is based on weather… and whether we want to move or stay. Think flexible\, fun\, and more ambitious. This can be used as a Level 3 Trip Leader Training trip\, if so desired. \nTo ensure your safety and maintain the flexibility of small camps\, we limit this trip to only five participants. \nPaddling Skills\nIsle Royale Explorer trips are appropriate for intermediate paddlers – this means that you should be comfortable paddling 8-15 miles/day in 2-3 ft seas in up to 15 knots of wind and be familiar with group rescues. If you are not\, we do offer a number of weekend skills workshops to help you grow those skills.\n \n \n \n \n \n \nSample Itinerary for 11 Day trip\n(includes 2 travel days)\nDay 1: \nArrival Day in Copper Harbor. Rendezvous in Copper Harbor at 4:30 PM at the Minnetonka Resort for a quick backcountry packing orientation. \nDay 2\n7 AM meet-up at the dock of the Isle Royale Queen for the 3.5 hour ride to Rock Harbor. Organize and pack for the short paddle to the first campsite. \nDays 3-9\nThe heart of the trip–you’ll find yourself paddling an average of 4 or 5 hours/day sandwiched with day hikes\, fishing\, shooting photos\, looking for Moose and listening to the music of our largest freshwater sea. We may choose a layover at a particularly nice campsite to give us more time to explore and linger a bit. You should be prepared for temps between 40- 80…bring a wool hat and a swimsuit. We’ll be covering 60 to 100 miles total with some days being relaxing and some challenging. You can count on learning lots of new paddle skills and having a truly spectacular experience. \nDay 10\nIn the afternoon\, we’ll be ferried back to Copper Harbor for a last group dinner and a good night’s sleep at the Minnetonka. \nDay 11\nTravel day: you move on to your next adventure\, whether a drive home or an extended exploration of the fabulous Keweenaw Peninsula.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dates for 2026\n\nSeptember 11-21\n\nNote: These trips fill fast\, but we will have a wait list. Please call 248-224-1044 or email to check availability or to be wait-listed.\n\n\nWhat’s Included:\n\nOne night lodging before and one after in Copper Harbor (double occupancy – single occupancy rates available)\nRound-trip ferry for you & your kayak\nNational Park permits & daily user fee\nExpert sea kayak guides\nAll group gear (tents\, kitchen gear\, dry bags\, safety and camp gear)\nGourmet backcountry meals\n\nWhat’s Not Included\n\nTravel to/from Copper Harbor\nKayak rental (available—reserve early). If need a kayak\, please add that as an add-on to your booking\, to be sure we have one for you.\nPersonal Items: Be sure to review the packing list. It is important that you review this list early on in case you have questions or need to order gear.\nTravel Insurance (strongly recommended)\nGuide gratuities (10+% suggested)\n\nKayaking Equipment\nWe do not include kayaks on this trip because most paddlers at this level have their own. SUMMARY:Tasmania: Three Capes Lodge-Based Private Trip
DESCRIPTION:Where on earth can you go kayaking with whales and seals and then go hiking with Kangaroos\, Wallabies and Wombats? Tasmania\, of course! This southernmost island state of Australia has an amazing topography and stunning coastline of rocky promontories broken up by sand beaches. It is truly one of most breathtaking coastlines we have ever seen with relatively warm seas and amazingly pleasant temperate weather.  Combine this with a rich local food and wine culture and an outdoor focused population you really have a recipe for a great adventure. \nWe are joining forces with Southern Sea Ventures to bring this private trip for Uncommon Adventures.  Although they normally try to book 10-12 people in tandems\, this trip for us is designed for 6-8 people primarily focused on single kayaks (tandems available on request).  We are also cherry picking the sweet spot of the season away from the summer crowds. This trip is based out of a nice private lodge with guides providing meals along the way. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n5-Day Itinerary\n(1 travel days included)\nDay 1\nArrival Day…make your own way to the group hotel in central Hobart \nDay 2\nMeet your kayak guide for the transfer to the Tasman Peninsula. The adventure begins with a short paddle to Port Arthur historic site\, where we experience a unique view from the water. Continuing our paddles south\, we pass dramatic cliffs and sandy beaches before finishing at Safety Cove. Transfer to our private lodge\, home for the next three nights. \nDay 3\nToday’s paddle is towards Cape Hauy\, one of the highlights of the Three Capes Track. If the weather allows\, we’ll paddle to the base of the Candle Stick\, a mecca for rock climbers from around the world. Located nearby is a seal haul-out where we can pause while Australian fur seals play around us. Returning to the shelter of the bay\, we explore hidden coves before heading back to the lodge. \nDay 4\nToday we explore Lime Bay Coastal Reserve\, taking in pretty lagoons\, eucalypt woodlands and convict history. On our northwards paddle\, we pass delicate sandstone cliffs and sandy beaches\, spotting stingrays and sea eagles along the way. Transfer back to the lodge for a last-night celebration dinner. \nDay 5\nThis morning\, we launch the kayaks from the shelter of Pirates Bay and experience true ocean kayaking as we paddle south past the Tasman Arch and Blowhole. Towering sea cliffs\, deep sea caves and abundant marine life are highlights of today’s paddle. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Dates for 2027\n\nFebruary 28 – March 4\, 2027\n\nWhat’s Included\n\nOne night’s accommodation in Hobart on the first night (Double Occupancy)\nThree nights lodge-based accommodation on the Tasman Peninsula (Double Occupancy)\nAll meals from breakfast on Day 2 to lunch on Day 5-with an emphasis on fresh and local produce\nWorld class kayak guides\nAll kayak and safety equipment\nComplimentary selection of local wine\, beer\, cider\, and soft drinks each evening\nAll transportation between Hobart city and the Tasman Peninsula.\nLogistical assistance\n\nWhat’s Not Included\n\nGuide gratuity (5-10% suggested)\nTransportation to and from Hobart\nMeals in Hobart (except breakfast at the hotel on Day 2)\nSingle room supplements\nPost trip lodging and activities\nItems of a personal nature\nTravel Insurance (Very highly recommended – we recommend you look at World Nomads\, Allianz\, Travel Guard – and make sure it covers adventure sports)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nRegistration\nNOTE: If a booking date shows on the calendar below\, there is space available but always feel free to call or email with specific questions. SUMMARY:Tasmania Kayak Camping Trip
DESCRIPTION:We greatly enjoyed paddling and camping here last year. One campsite offered us an evening stroll to watch the sunset with some friendly Wombats on Maria despite their endangered status. This national park has daily ferry service for people visiting its historic penal colony and hiking and mountain bike trails. This preserve is also home to Devils\, Forest Kangaroos\, Wallabies and Pademelons and other ubiquitous Australian animals.  Visiting it by sea kayak allows us the opportunity to avoid the crowds and see things they would never see. Because of the island’s unique hourglass shape\, it has a number of exposures for paddling variety and distances. Camping here is rustic and everything\, including fresh water\, travels with us. You can expect some sea mammals along the way\, bouncy clear water\, rocky outcroppings interspersed with sandy beaches covered with a variety of shells from Scallops to sand dollars. Our time window is late summer where waters are warmer\, nights are pleasantly cool and blue skies are frequent. We found the climate to be super pleasant with very few bugs and breathtaking land and seascapes. \nWe partner with our friends at Southern Sea Ventures to offer you this trip and have confidence in their staff and ability to offer you a very special peek at their back yard. They are used to doing programs with groups of 10-12 and have agreed to offer us a private small group booking. It costs a bit more to do this\, but we find that small groups provide a much richer experience for all…including your guides. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n5-Day Itinerary\n(1 travel day included)\n \nDay 0 (Arrive by March 7)\nYou get to Tassie by flying to Australia (via Sidney or Melbourne)\, then boarding the hour-long flight to Hobart. Recommend coming in a day or two early to rest up from the long flights are massive time adjustment. Overnight on your own. \nDay 1 (March 8)\nMeet your guides in Hobart for transport to put in and start point for the crossing to Maria Island. Camp on the island. \nDays 2-4 (March 9-11)\nDepending on weather outlook\, you may move camp or not\, but explore each end of the hourglass with time to explore trails\, stretch legs on pocket beaches\, look for sea mammals \nDay 5 (March 12)\nCross the channel back to the take out and return to Hobart. Hotel overnight on your own. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Dates for 2027\n\nMarch 8-12\n\nWhat’s Included\n\nWorld class kayak guides\nAll kayak and safety equipment\nCamping gear\nAll backcountry meals\nPermits and camping fees\nLand transportation between Hobart and the launch.\nLogistical assistance\n\nWhat’s Not Included\n\nAirfare to and from Hobart\nLodging before and after the backcountry trip\nPersonal expenses\nTravel Insurance (Required – we recommend you look at World Nomads\, Allianz\, Travel Guard – and make sure it covers adventure sports)\nGuide gratuity (5-10% suggested)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nRegistration\nNOTE: If a booking date shows on the calendar below\, there is space available but always feel free to call or email with specific questions. SUMMARY:Shetland Islands: Pinnacle Adventure Summer 2027
DESCRIPTION:Dynamic conditions\, a remote lodge base\, geographically distinct and culturally interesting population all make this an amazing place to paddle. We are partnering with our friend Eila Wilkinson to bring this trip to 6 qualified paddlers and three\, maybe even four coaches.  Fantastic opportunity for ACA Levels 3 and 4 paddlers to up their game and see this amazing semi-Nordic island. This will be an unparalleled opportunity for skill development with a great team and an inspiring backdrop. NDK kayaks will be brought over on the ferry for this program by Eila and we will do our best to get everyone well fit for the week. We’ll be providing most of the food service this week\, so you depend on high standard provisioning. Technically\, Shetland is part of Scotland\, but inhabitants think of themselves as more Scandinavian\, so it is an incredibly unique place to visit with amazing land and seascapes\, incredible seabirds and culture. With a population of 23\,000 and close enough to Norway geographically and historically to make nationality an ambiguous concept\, the Shetland Islands are Britain’s most northerly outpost. There’s a Scandinavian lilt to the local accent\, and streets named King Haakon or St Olaf are reminders that Shetland was under Norse rule until 1469\, when it was gifted to Scotland in lieu of the dowry of a Danish princess. \nOur expedition base camp this year is a beautifully converted church in the picturesque village of Walls\, next to the sea with beautiful views. The spacious house sleeps 8 people in 4 rooms. Spectacular open-plan living/dining/kitchen area featuring church windows and oak staircase to upper balcony\, 2 1/2 bathrooms with all linen and towels provided. \nEpic sea kayaking and exploring awaits the adventurous paddler. The adventure begins with your journey to arrive onto the Shetland Islands. The coast offers amyriad of sea caves\, stacks\, islands and voes with a limitless amount of exploring and amazement. Exposed to winds and the Atlantic swells\, the nature of these majestic islands offers magnificent paddling. The emphasis is on exploring and enjoyment\, while we will be exposed to tidal races\, surf and swells at times the ethos of the expedition is not a surf and tide races course. Our expedition base gives us optimum flexibility to maximise the best paddles according to the prevailing weather and conditions present\, without restrictions or by being storm bound. Paddlers should be paddling fit\, able to comfortably paddle at a reasonable pace and happy to undertake full and big days in the kayak with the possibility of extended paddle legs if landings are not immediately available. We hope to have 5 days on the water with an additional land or paddle day. \nSuggested Itinerary: \n\nJuly 8: Arrive in Aberdeen\, Scotland\, overnight on your own\nJuly 9: Overnight ferry to Lerwick (cabin highly recommended). You must reserve your own tickets but we can help guide you on dates and times.\nJuly 10: Travel to Lodge\nJuly 11-16: This is the juicy center bit with amazing guided kayaking day trips out from a private lodge. Your guides will prepare meals for the group during the week\, with the exception of a couple of nights out at local restaurants.\nJuly 17: Travel to Lerwick for the evening ferry back to Aberdeen\nJuly 18: Early morning ferry arrival for your further travel or flights onward\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Dates for 2027\n\nJuly 8-18\, 2027 (NOTE: Trip is currently full.
