This program is designed for those who would like to gain a strong set of tools for paddling Midwestern waters, whether they be inland lakes or gentle rivers. Using both canoes and kayaks, we’ll work together to teach you basic strokes, maneuvering skills and effective rescues that work from either platform. You’ll spend a full day with each type of watercraft with professional Instructor Trainers covering a range of skills from the American Canoe Association Level 2 kayak and canoe skills outlines.

Itinerary

June 1

2pm arrival for orientation and pre-course work: meet at the big shelter behind the front row of cabins.

June 2 – 3

Both days will have morning and afternoon sessions on water in both canoes and kayaks. Each participant will spend one full day with a Kayak Instructor Trainer and one full day with an Canoe Instructor Trainer. In both cases, strokes covered will be forward, back, turning, stopping, bracing and recoveries (ie: rescues) as well as risk management. In the end, all participants should be able to assist and rescue either canoe or kayak from either type of boat.

Dates for 2022

June 1 – 3

The second part of this course series, Paddling Trip Leadership Training, follows on June 4 and 5.

Cost

$295 / person; dorm lodging with shared kitchen OR
$250 / person; camping on site

What to Bring

What to bring: Quick dry layered clothing (NOT cotton), a dry bag for a change of clothes, life jacket if you have your own and some food for days you’ll be there. Each dorm cabin has a kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave, some cookware and kitchen tools. Try to coordinate with others if you can.

Clothing Example List

  • Long underwear: polypropylene, polyester, coolmax, wool, etc. — anything but cotton, both tops and bottoms, can be worn under shorts too for a very comfortable if not very stylish ensemble.
  • Fleece Jacket or pullover
  • Paddling Jacket or raincoat
  • Water shoes or neoprene boots: We discourage sandals because they can get tangled in footrests….and that’s bad if your upside down.
  • One-liter plastic water bottle
  • Sunscreen
